When you take (make) a photograph, how do you like the light to be? Direct or Bounced? Direct Flash is when the Flash Unit is focused straight on the subject. In the case of Bounced Flash, its bounced off the ceiling, walls or a reflector. The picture on the left used direct flash, and the one on the right used bounced flash. Bounced light gives a nice even and diffused light on the subject. Direct flash does seem a bit harsh and in this case, highlights the oily skin.

To diffuse light, you could use diffusers like the Stofen Omnibounce on your Flash Speedlite head. There is also light boxes that you get for various speedlites. Photography is the art of "Painting with Light". And as I mentioned earlier, we all MAKE and not TAKE a photograph. Happy Shooting :).
